CHAPTER NINETEEN

TRACY

Tracy and Jeffrey had spent what seemed like the entire night having sex. Tracy wouldn’t call it making love because clearly, Jeffrey only had one thing on his mind. He was trying his best to get Tracy pregnant right then and there. She wanted to tell him that it didn’t work like that but didn’t want to bring him down off of his high. Even if she could get pregnant, she would have to be ovulating. Jeffrey hadn’t asked anything about that, so she assumed that he had no clue about the ins and outs of getting pregnant. Tracy felt that this was a plus. It would give her more time to stall until she told him that kids were definitely out of the question for them.

Tracy was still in the bed when Jeffrey got up, got ready and left for work. The girls should have been gone by now as well. Kacee would drop Kylee off at school before driving herself to school. Tracy had felt that Kacee was too young to be driving but relented after she completed the driver’s education course. She still wasn’t supposed to be driving while she was in the car by herself, but Tracy let her because both schools were less than a mile away.

Tracy sat up on the side of the bed wondering what she was going to do about the whole baby situation. She picked up her phone and dialed Stacy’s number.

“Hey,” Tracy spoke when Stacy said hello.

“What’s wrong?” Stacy asked.

“Who said that something was wrong?” Tracy was defensive.

“I did. I know your voice tones and the one I just heard says that something is wrong. Now, quit grilling me and tell me what’s the matter,” Stacy said.

“Are you at the firm?” Tracy asked.

“Yes.”

“Okay, I’m going to come by,” Tracy said.

“Oh this is serious,” Stacy stated.

“It is. I’ll be on my way as soon as I get dressed,” Tracy replied.

Tracy jumped into the shower all the while thinking about where this would end. Before this weekend, she could see herself growing old with Jeffrey. In a matter of one conversation, she didn’t have a clue if they would be together next year.

When Tracy stepped out of the shower, she heard her phone ringing. She walked over to the counter and picked it up. She didn’t want to answer it thinking that it might be Knight calling again. She thought back to what he had said before she hung up on him. “Naw, you not getting married. You’re going to a funeral.” Those words kept replaying over and over in her head. She wondered if he was threatening her or Jeffrey, or both of them.

Tracy decided to answer the call. It was what she had to do. It could be one of the kids. She slid her finger across the button to answer the call.

“Hello,” she said tentatively into the receiver.

“This is your last opportunity to dump that young punk.”

Tracy sighed. She didn’t have time for this shit. “Knight, what the fuck are you talking about?” I’m changing my number today, Tracy thought.
